What is professional teeth cleaning (ultrasonic tartar removal)?
The professional cleaning of your teeth will be carried out by our friendly and skilled dental hygienists.
In the first step, the dental hygienist uses an ultrasonic device (depurator) to remove dirt and tartar from the surface of the teeth. The final phase of ultrasonic tartar removal is polishing. This is done with a special polishing cream, which is available in different degrees of fineness and with proper application, the surface of the teeth can be polished to such a mirror-smooth level that plaque and tartar do not stick to it until later or not at all. Our clinical hygienists then provide you with personalized oral hygiene advice that helps you maintain the healing results achieved in the long term.
Why should dental calculus be removed?
- It can cause gingivitis and weaken the immune system.
- It can cause loosening/loss of teeth in the long run
- It affects the health of your gums and teeth
- It can be a source of unpleasant breath
- It causes bleeding of your gums and you may experience pain
- It should always be performed before teeth whitening. This can enhance the effectiveness of your teeth whitening, giving you beautiful white teeth, but also healthy gums, shiny and calculus-free teeth.
What does oral hygiene advice mean?
During your consultation with the dentist or the dental hygienist, we will show you and explain which areas are where calculus is most likely to form. We will demonstrate the correct techniques when brushing your teeth and what tools to use to maintain a good oral hygiene. We provide our patients with information which will help them to maintain the health and radiant appearance of their teeth in the long run.
How long does the treatment last?
It can take about 20-50 minutes, it depends on how much calculus needs removing. It varies for each individuals.
Is the treatment painful?
In the vast majority of cases, no anaesthesia is required for calculus removal and the treatment is painless. The rapid vibration of the ultrasonic vibration head pulverises the calculus build-up on the teeth. The tooth surfaces hidden underneath may be sensitive for a moment, but the degree of sensitivity is easily tolerated. On request or if necessary, the treatment can be performed under anaesthesia.
How often should calculus be removed?
The rate of dental calculus formation is influenced by many factors, such as the amount and quality of saliva, the density, shape and position of teeth, the presence of decay or cavities, oral hygiene habits, diet, etc. Taking all this into account, our staff will tailor the frequency of professional cleaning to your needs. Even in the most ideal circumstances, it is worth having an oral hygiene treatment with a dental check-up twice a year.
